BERESFORD STREET (Market, next to Victoria Club)
First mentioned as a public road in 1822 the street was named after Viscount William Carr Beresford, who was Jersey's last Governor from 1821-1854, the year of his death. As a British General he had taken part in the capture of Cape Colony and Buenos Aires and had reorganized the Portuguese Army. One of the early paddle steamers between Portsmouth and Jersey was also named after him in 1824. For more in depth information on Viscount Beresford please click here (opens in new window).
