He lived in this house from 1888-1898. At Oxford he was Secretary, Treasurer and in 1902 President of the Union. He was called to the English and Jersey Bars in 1906 and took silk in 1926. In 1931 he was the first King's Counsel to plead in the Island. During the Occupation he worked for the Channel Islands Refugee Committee. After the war, he was appointed Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, created a Life Peer and made a member of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.
